Specialist Architectural Practice

The Route aims to invigorate and join together the places through which it passes.
It connects the sea front to the city centre and to the Olympic swimming pool beyond.
It passes the birth place of Charles Dickens, and the former homes of Conan-
H.G. Wells.
Deer Park Alpha developed this project as an in house research project without a client. Whilst writing Where We Live we started looking at Portsmouth in a different light. The city is made up of many interesting neighbourhoods, that have become disconnected over time. This disconnection is
mostly caused by decisions made to make it easy to move around by car, though at the expense of pedestrians, and cyclists.
The route creates a series of vibrant places that connect the now isolated neighbourhoods of Somerstown, Landport, Buckland and Stamshaw.
There are very few major changes required to realise the Route in its simplest form – the starting point for all the ideas shown here is a Route that already exists and simply needs to be defined.

We presented the project in person to the following organisations: Ofsted, SEEDA, SUSTRANS, Portsmouth City Council, City Growth, The News, Places for People, The Royal Navy, Tourism South East and LOCOG. As a result we managed to obtain funding from Portsmouth City Council to erect nearly sixty signs, designed by us, along The Route.
