University of Southampton - Architecture

Teaching first year civil engineering students architecture.

It is vitally important for us to be involved with university education. We consider much of our work research and having the resource of a university to engage with brings enormous benefits to our clients projects. On several occasions we have been able to introduce our clients to existing university research programmes.

The University of Southampton runs the only UK course that teaches both Civil Engineering and Architecture. Students graduate with a degree that enables them to study a Post Graduate Diploma in Architecture or pursue a career in structural

or civil engineering. Either way they have a different view on engineering, design and architecture.

Carl Leroy-Smith is a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton and runs the first year architecture course, which he has written from the ground up and delivers over a 12 week period every year. The course teaches the fundamentals of architecture from the basics of shelter to forming space. Oliver Merkin teaches design and graphics within the first year course

In addition Carl tutors third and fourth year individual and group dissertations.
