‘A Place to Live’ - Sustainable Architecture

Rethinking how the Royal Navy accommodate their service men and women

The Royal Naval Estates Organisation (RNEO) and VT Flagship instigated a research project amongst their supply chain to develop advanced sustainable accommodation for the Royal Navy. We looked at upgrading the existing design solution (similar to a Travel Lodge hotel) to the highest possible environment and BREEAM standards. Additionally, we explored starting from scratch to design a new solution.

VT were impressed with the innovative ideas we produced and asked us to look at integrating them into a live project in Devon. At the heart of our proposal is simplicity. The stripping away of layers of poor design and wasteful construction to create a place that gives back more than it takes.

The design features accommodation grouped around a central courtyard and connected by a series of green social spaces. accommodation contains a prefabricated bathroom/bed pod and balcony to the Courtyard. They are all given character by a happy choice of colour and handsome, robust materials. The Courtyard is a quiet private place and much like a Roman villa, it is the heart of the building. It provides space for social interaction, a wildlife sanctuary and is critical to the cooling of the building.
