Specialist Architectural Practice

This competition entry for a new masterplan in Naples, Florida was short listed and exhibited in the USA. The existing city is a very low density car centric grid, split in two by Highway 41. The city has a wonderful waterfront, but one is unaware of it from most of the downtown areas.
We proposed a high density development which focused on creating pedestrian friendly streets and squares. Not only did we connect the city to it waterfront, but we bought the waterfront into the city with a series of pools and canals.
Because we focused on pedestrians moving through the new urban spaces we choose design the entire master plan through perspective sketches which we then turned into a plan. The usual way of working is to design the plan then visualise it in perspective.
The design featured a series helter shelters that enabled people to climb to the top and look across the city. This feature clearly caught the imagination and got a write up in the Naples News. Apparently we had designed a “British funhouse concept”.
Interesting to look back on this project – done in early 2006 – as many of the urban design principles employed link to our book
Where We Live written in 2008. Obvious perhaps, but we had not read widely on matters urban design in 2006. And certainly had not conducted the sort of research it took to write Where We Live.
